Future is coming on bicycle
The reign of the car as the main means of transport is wobbling. Simple, safe and sustainable bicycle, more than one century old, is called to become the natural replacement of vehicles. Not without reason: it’s a clean and cheap conveyance and is also considered as the fastest and most eco-friendly way for distances between 1 and 8 kilometers.
The second half of the twentieth century is over, when the purchase of cars had multiplied exponentially in the population, after having been a good only within reach ot the more aflluent social classes. However, after half a century of use and abuse of private cars, its darker side can be seen. The high cost of oil, maintenance and reparations in addition to the increased awareness of the environmental care, not to forget the crisis affecting the whole planet, has put in serious trouble to the omnipresent car. Instead of that, a silent machine whose engines are our legs, it’s gaining supporters. Simple, easy to maintain and environmentally friendly. The bicycle is a clean, fast, cheap and sustainable transport. So it is gaining a more important role in the mobility of many cities worldwide.
The facts speak for themselves. Today, the production of bicycles (over 100 million per year) triples that of the cars. Moreover, Europe is the place in the world where the bicycle is more used, as an alternative to the car. In Amsterdam, 33 percent of travel is by cycling while in Copenhagen the same percentage, one third of the travellers, use the bike to go to work. London also draws attention to the change of mind: users of two wheels have doubled in ten years, currently reaching 575,000. Its authorities have agreed on an investment of 1,000 million euro in infrastructures.
To the advantages of cycling already mentioned we must add the health. Two 15-minute journeys daily by bicycle are enough to keep a healthy heart. Its moderate and regular practice can halved heart conditions. Also, other medical diseases decrease such as hypertension, chronic bronchitis or asthma and muscle tone is also improved. All this contributes to a sense of personal satisfaction that promotes mood.
Hence the desirability of encouraging the use of this conveyance across the population. Children and adolescents deserve special attention since the daily pedaling in their displacement reduces obesity, a poor increasingly common in early stages, as a result of bad diets and new entertainment options related to new technologies.
